Meta and the EU Have a Disagreement About the Metaverse
Social media giant Meta is in dispute with EU representatives over the future of the metaverse.
Meta proposes a single metaverse in which the company has a centralized power, while EU representatives think that there should be more than one metaverse universe.
Meta and the EU Have Different Thoughts
Eva Kaili, a member of the European Parliament who led the Parliament’s report on NFTs, said on the issue:
“In this new digital world, it is extremely important to be careful not to recreate centralization and new types of gate-keepers.
It is critical that people have full power over their digital lives, the data they share and the content they produce.”
Aura Salla, Meta’s head of EU affairs Tuesday, thinks differently.:
“If we focus on creating a single governance, our economy, consumers and customers will benefit from this”
Joachim Schwerin, chief economist of the Council of Europe’s digital transformation unit, is also opposed to centralization:
“No matter how we look at it, we cannot come to a centralized approach. We killed all the creativity we had.
There can never be a single central solution. There will be many different solutions.”
The official of the social media giant noted that there are employment studies:
“We have said that in the coming years, we will hire 10,000 people in Europe to work on the metaverse. This still remains our commitment.”
